Following the
death of the Falcon's Captain, Alex Semoyov, the airmen see Johnny
Red as their new leader. The Squadron Commander, Colonel Yaraslov,
has other ideas and brings in Lieutenant Nikolai Zagorny, a hero of the
Soviet Union, to inspire the squadron. Unknown to all but Redburn,
Zagorny is an empty shell of a man who has fought one battle too
many. He has lost his nerve, but his cowardice may cost the
Falcons more than a loss of morale at the sight of this broken
man. Johnny agrees to help Zagorny face his fears, whilst
protecting him from the squadron's scrutiny. Only four of the
original Falcons remain, but when Zagorny causes the death of
Savitski, even Johnny Red loses patience with the fallen hero.
Meanwhile, a Spitfire pilot known as Coppel is on his way to
Leningrad...
