The
Creators - Carlos Pino
Carlos
Pino was born in Madrid on the 7th of September 1940. He enjoyed a
happy childhood in which comics were not so much an escape valve as a
narrative platform that gave him the desire to become a professional comic
artist. With the help of friends and almost completely self-taught, he
began to draw comic strips for denominational publications of the late
Fifties and early Sixties, such as Trampolín, Clarín, Duwarín and
3 Amigos. Working for this last publication he came to know Cicuéndez
and Almusán, with whom he formed the Sagitario Studio. The Studio
unsuccessfully attempted to publish the Spanish version of Eagle, which Rollán
would later publish under the revised title of Toucan. In the
early Sixties, Pino formed a fruitful alliance with the author Vicente Alcázar
that would last for many years. Together, under the acronym CARVIC, they
created a multitude of war comic strips, initially for Chío, then later
for the English market. Sometimes they worked through a Spanish agency but
mainly they were employed directly by a variety of French publishers and
the British based Bensberg and Temple companies. They also created comic
books for the American market, thanks to the negotiations of author
and publisher Gray Morrow, mainly for the Archie and
Charlton imprints. Moving
to the USA, Alcázar and Pino briefly shared a studio with Neal Adams,
and obtained work for Warren and Marvel. Alcázar continued working for
the American market, but Pino soon returned to the British market, now working for IPC/Fleetway on titles including Battle Picture Weekly, 2000 AD,
Starlord, Adventure, Speed and Mask, drawing mainly war comic strips and
science fiction during the Seventies and Eighties. The
mid-Eighties crisis in the British Comics market forced Pino to look for
work that was broader in scope, such as advertising illustration. He also
began drawing for Scotland’s D.C. Thompson, illustrating monthly titles
such as Victor and Commando. Pino continues to draw war comics for
Commando, and creates story-boards for advertising campaigns. He currently
lives in Seville with his wife, their two daughters and their grandsons.
